Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday

In our line of work, we don’t have the luxury of ignoring what most people try not to think about. We see how fragile life really is. We see how fast things change. We see the reality behind the words, “you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

Ash Wednesday isn’t about fear — it’s about clarity.

It’s a reset. A reminder that the job, the noise, the pride, the stress — none of it lasts. What matters is who we are when the alarm rings… and who we are when they don’t.

Lent calls us to be better — not just stronger firefighters, but better people. More patient. More disciplined. More faithful. The same way we train our bodies and sharpen our skills, we’re called to train our souls.

Today, wear the ashes with purpose. Let them remind you that every call matters, every life matters, and how we live — on duty and off — matters.

Firefighter’s Prayer for Ash Wednesday

Lord,
You have called me into a job where I face the reality of life and death more often than most.
Keep my heart grounded in humility, knowing that I am dust, and everything I have is from You.

When pride creeps in, remind me who I serve.
When stress and anger take hold, give me patience and control.
When I grow tired, strengthen me — not just in body, but in spirit.

On the fireground, keep me steady.
In the quiet moments, keep me faithful.
Help me to serve with courage, to lead with integrity, and to care for others with compassion.

And when my time comes, Lord,
let me be found ready — having lived not just for the job, but for You.

Amen.
